Today is the 73rd anniversary of the surprise attack by the Japanese on the US fleet anchored in Pearl Harbor. It was intended as a preventative action to keep the US Pacific Fleet from interfering with military actions Japan was planning in Southeast Asia and it was the catalyst which lead to the United States’ entry into World War II.  The attack commenced at 7:48 am on December 7, 1941. The base was attacked by 353 Japanese fighter planes, bombers and torpedo planes in two waves launched from six aircraft carriers. All eight US Navy battleships were damaged, with four being sunk. All but one, the ‘Arizona’ were later raised. Today the Arizona remains in her watery grave; a solemn memorial to those who lost their lives. Location: Pearl Harbor Memorial, Oahu, Hawaii
